Ever since I read the novel, back in 2010c American Gods has been my favorite book. The storyline, while great, is not my favorite part, however.
(Here's a peak, via BuzzFeed, at some of the actors and images for the new TV Series! 📺)
A Paperback copy of the 15th Anniversary Cover that I JUST had to buy! Despite, you know, already owning a copy. lol. I regret nothing.
In the novel, the storyline revolves around a war between the old gods (mythological figure such as Odin, Easter, and Bastet) and the new gods that humanity worships (such as television, technology, railroads, and drugs). Both of them are trying to exist, while thinking the other is attempting to wipe them from existence.
However, the way the author approaches the death of the gods is amazing. The gods, as entities, simply exist as tangible and powerful figures as long as they are being worshipped and beloved by their people. As they begin to be forgotten by the people that worshipped them, they fade out of existence, living a tragic life that is no longer what they were used to.
The novel takes the reader from the depths of the south, to shitty apartments in big cities, to San Francisco.
Tbh, if you haven't read it, you definitely should.
While it is a bit problematic in its usage of Native American folklore and mythology, including the fact that Aztec and Mexica gods only get a brief mention despite the fact that it's a huge part of Latino/Chicano culture in the United States (but I'm not salty), the novel is still an amazing read!
And if reading is not your thing, a comic series just started, along with the Television series at the end of April!
So check it out, tbh!
